Susan Terpning (nacida en 1953), residente de Silver City, Nuevo México, es pintora de figuras de los indios de las Grandes Llanuras y sus caballos. Sus padres fomentaron su creatividad desde su infancia en Connecticut. Su padre, Howard Terpning, un exitoso pintor del oeste americano, fue un factor clave en su dedicación al arte y posteriormente se convirtió en su maestro.
De niña, dibujaba continuamente temas indígenas, pero en la Universidad Drew de Madison, Nueva Jersey, se especializó en antropología. Tras casarse, se mudó a Maryland, donde continuó cultivando su interés por la antropología trabajando como guía en el Instituto Smithsonian. Necesitaba ingresos, por lo que su padre le sugirió que pintara figuras indígenas alegres y optimistas con un estilo muy realista.
Su investigación se basa en visitas a museos, libros y fotografías, así como en su participación en recreaciones históricas de encuentros de tramperos, donde viste ropa de piel de venado de los indios de las Grandes Llanuras que ella misma confecciona.
En 1978, se mudó a Albuquerque, Nuevo México.
Susan Terpning (Born 1953), resident of Silver City, New Mexico, Susan Terpning is a painter of Plains Indian figures and their horses. Her parents encouraged her creativity from her childhood in Connecticut. Her father, is highly successful western painter Howard Terpning, whose commitment to art was a major factor in her becoming a professional artist. He later became her teacher.
As a child, she continually drew Indian subjects, but in college at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, she majored in anthropology and then married and moved to Maryland from where she continued her anthropology interests by serving as a guide at the Smithsonian Institution. But she needed income, so her father suggested she turn to painting upbeat or cheerful Indian subjects in a highly realistic style.
She does her research in museums, from books and photographs, as well as from participating in mountain-men rendezvous re-enactments where she wears Plains Indian buckskin clothing she has made.
In 1978, she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
