Crufts, que fue fundada en 1891 como un All Dog Breed Show, ahora se ha establecido como el más grande Dog Show en el mundo, el cual forma parte esencial de la agenda social de Gran Bretaña y atrae a expositores y visitantes de todo el mundo, dando al evento un toque muy cosmopolita. Crufts, que está considerado toda una institución canina, ha sido auspiciada por el Kennel Club que organizó su primer Crufts en 1948. El programa ha crecido más allá de todo reconocimiento de esos días en su base en el Olympia, con ahora 1 millón de pies cuadrados en la NEC, Birmingham. Este año Crufts ha atraído a más de 22,000 perros top y dará la bienvenida a visitantes de todo el mundo.
Pero, ¿cómo pudo Crufts llegar a obtener un reconocimiento tan unánime? El primer show de perros organizado tuvo lugar en el Ayuntamiento de Newcastle-upon-Tyne el 28-29 de junio de 1959 y había sesenta entradas de Pointers y Setters. Se llevó a cabo sólo una clase para cada raza en estas tempranas demostraciones y los perros eran desconocidos excepto sus afijos.
En 1870 se decidió que era necesario un organismo controlador para legislar en materia canina. Se convoco al Sr SE Shirley junto a la Comisión del National Dog Club y sobrevino una discusión que dio lugar a la reunión de doce caballeros en Albert Mansion nº 2, Victoria Street, Londres, el 04 de abril de 1873. Esta reunión marcó la fundación del Kennel Club.
Fundador Original
Poco después de que el Kennel Club hubiera sido fundado, la Comisión debió de tener noticias de las actividades un cierto Sr. Charles Cruft, el fundador original del espectáculo de perros más grande del mundo.
Después de graduarse de la Universidad en 1876, tres años después de fundado el Kennel Club, Charles Cruft dio la espalda al negocio de joyería de sus padres pese a la gran consternación de estos, para decidir que el mundo del perro era para él. Inicialmente tomó el empleo, junto con James Spratt en Holborn, Londres, de venta de galletas para perros, donde se pone rápidamente a usar su visión y talento empresarial.
Sus viajes lo llevaron por todo el país, donde utilizaba sus excepcionales habilidades de venta para convencer a grandes hacendados, criadores y propietarios que esos productos de perro eran para ellos. James Spratt, al darse cuenta del talento y ambición de su nuevo protegido envió Cruft a Europa a respaldar aún más la empresa. Fue en Francia en 1878 que criadores de franceses, impresionados con sus habilidades obvias, invitaron a Cruft a organizar la promoción de la sección canina de la exposición de París. Hacía apenas dos años que salió de la Universidad.
Cruft continuó desarrollando sus conocimientos en el mundo del perro y era evidente que su mayor pasión era la organización y gestión de exposiciones caninas. Al informar sobre el éxito de Crufts en 1930, Croxton Smith OBE, Presidente del Kennel Club en 1937-1948 dijo: 'El Señor Cruft es el Napoleón del mundo del perro'. En 1886 él tomó la dirección del Allied Terrier Club Show en Westminster en Londres y las primeras semillas de la más grande exposición canina del mundo historia fueron sembradas en Islington en 1891, cuando Charles reservó el Royal Agricultural Hall y puso su firma en el evento.
Bajo la nueva administración
Después de una muy larga y exitosa trayectoria en el mundo de la organización de espectáculos caninos y sirviendo en sus comités, Charles Cruft murió en 1938 y su viuda se hizo cargo de la Feria de 1939. Tres años más tarde Sra. Cruft sentía la responsabilidad de que el show se hacia demasiado exigente y de que un espectáculo de este calibre debería tener una ocupación a tiempo completo y ciertamente no para los débiles de corazón. Ubicación
La primera exposición bajo los auspicios del Kennel Club se celebró en 1948 en el Olympia y resultó un éxito inmediato. Fueron los cimientos para que el Kennel Club lanzara el show hasta el éxito fenomenal que goza hoy. En 1979 se decidió cambiar el lugar del Olympia a Earls Court para hacer frente a la demanda, como el número creciente de expositores y visitantes del espectáculo rompiendo todas las previsiones. Allí permaneció hasta 1991, cuando necesitó de nuevo un lugar aún más grande, debido a la popularidad del evento. En 1991 la exposición Crufts Centenario se celebró en el National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, por lo tanto, 2016 es el año 27 que el show ha sido puesto en escena en el NEC. Hoy en día, Crufts ofrece a los visitantes una oportunidad única para ver más de 22,000 perros de alto pedigree, compiten en más de 3.000 clases individuales por el codiciado BIS, el mayor logro en el mundo de los perros.
El evento ofrece a los visitantes un programa canino variado e interesante, con demostraciones, juicios de razas, exhibiciones, demostraciones, competiciones de agility, flyball y caza por nombrar unos pocos. The event, witch forms essential part of an Britain's social calendar, attracts exhibitors and visitors from all over the world giving the event a trully cosmopolitan feel.
Crufts is considered a canine institution, which has been nurtured by the Kennel Club which ran its first Crufts in 1948. The show has grown beyond all recognition from those days at its base at Olympia, with now over a million square feet of the NEC, Birmingham, being utillised. This year Crufts has attracted over 22.000 top dogs and will welcome visitors from all over the world. But how did Crufts obtain such an established pedigree? The first organised dog show was held in the Town Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 28-29th June 1959 and there were sixty entries of Pointers and Setters. Only one class was held for each breed at these early shows and the dogs were unidentified except for their kennel names.
By 1870 it was decided that a controlling body was necessary to legislate in canine matters. A Mr SE Shirley called together the National Dog Club Committe and a discussion ensued which resulted in twelve gentlemen meeting at No 2 Albert Mansions, Victoria Stree, London, on 4th April 1873. This meeting marked the founding of the Kennel Club.
Original Founder
Shortly after the Kennel Club had been founded, the Committee must have ecome aware of the activities of a certain Mr Charles Cruft, the original founder of the world's greatest dog show.
After graduating from college in 1876, three years after the Kennel Club had been founded. Charles Cruft turned his back on this father's jewellery business much to the dismay of his parents, deciding that the dog game was for him. He initially took employment with James Spratt in Holborn, London selling dog cakes where his vision and entrepreneurial talents were quickly put to use.
His travels took him all over the country, where he utilised his exceptional selling skills to convince large estates, sporting kennels, breeders and owners that these dog products were for them! James Spratt, realising his new protégé's talent and ambition sent Cruft to Europe to further endorse the company. It was in France in 1878 that French dog breeders, impressed with his obvious skills, invited Cruft to organise the promotion of the canine section of the Paris Exhibition. He was just two years out of college.
Cruft continued to develop his knowledge in the world of 'dogdom' and it was apparent that his greatest passion was thee organisation and management of canine exhibitions.
When reporting on the success of Crufts 1930 show, A Croxton Smith OBE, Chairman of the Kennel Club from 1937-1948 stated: 'Mr Cruft is the Napoleon of the dog world'.
In 1886 he took up the management of the Allied Terrier Club Show at Westminster in London and the first seeds of the world's greatest dog show's history were sown inIslington in 1891, when Charles booked the Royal Agricultural Hall and put his own to the event.
Under New Management
After a very long and successful career in the world of organising dog shows and serving on committees, Charles Cruft died in 1938 and his widow ran the 1939 show. Three years later Mrs Cruft felt the resonsibility of runing the show too demanding as a show of this calibre would centainly be a full-time occupation and certainly not for the faint hearted. In order to perpetuate the name of the show her husband had already made famous, she asked the Kennel Club to take up the reins on the understanding that the founders name remained.
Venues
The first show under the Kennel Club auspices was held in 1948 at olympia and proved an immediate success.
The foundations had been laid for the Kennel Club to take the show onwards to the phenomenal success that it enjoys today.
In 1979 it was decided to change the venue from Olympia to Earls Court to cope with demand, as the ever-increasing numbers of exhibitors and visitors had the show bursting at the seams. Here it remained until 1991, when it at to be moved to an even bigger venue, due to the popularity of the event. In 1991 the Crufts Centenary Show was held at The National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, therefore 2016 is the 27th year that the show has been staged at the NEC.
Today, Crufts provides visitors with a unique opportunity to see over 22.000 top pedigree dogs compete in over 3.000 individual classes, building up to the coveted Best in Show title - the greatest achievement in the world of dogs!
The event provides visitors with a varied and interesting canine programme, incorporating demostrations, breed judging, displays, competitions, agility, flyball and gundog competitions to name but a few. And they all lead up to the renowned Best in Show finale on Sunday.
It is fair to say that if Charles Cruft were alive today, he would be extremely proud of how his legacy has developed.
